4.1.2. Rating

The following is prepared to assist in "rating" the improvement process within the client's organization. The "16-step" framework is used for this.

Purpose of the rating is to have an instrument available to indicate what the relative chances are for success. As such, this rating instrument can be an important means of communication.

The implementation/improvement process meant here is directed at improving the "general health" of the client's organization, through the development and implementation of "standing plans" (as part of the "management system"). Although solution of specific problems (through "single use plans") is really outside the scope of this scoring system, it is felt that a major part of the 16 steps would also apply on these limited time projects.

  1. Senior Manager Leadership

  2. Management Team leadership

  3. Project Improvement Team (PIT)

  4. Internal Expertise

  5. Project communicated

  6. Opinion Survey

  7. Base-line Assessment

  8. Activity selection

  9. Introduction Training

  10. Activity Coordination Team(s) (ACT)

  11. Coordination training

  12. Make the plan (MAD's and structure)

  13. Implementation training

  14. Management briefing

  15. Do - carry out the activities according to plan

  16. Extend project as appropriate

"Motivation" - in particular of the top people in the organization - important as the process will not evolve unless the desire to change will be there.

Click on the hyperlink for each step for additional information on how to score the individual steps.

I am convinced that the changes for success will increase with an also increasing score. A (close to) maximum score, however, is required for certain steps as a prerequisite for the success of some other steps in the process. For example: the process can only succeed if the proper basis, in the from of leadership from the top, is there (to include at least steps 1, 2 and 3 ). Therefore one may argue that if the total score of the first three steps is less than say 12, the score of the other steps may have to be reduced or even eliminated.

The score provided is arbitrary and not based on any scientific or validated grounds. So as a user, you may wish to alter the numbers. A total score can be obtained by adding up the individual step scores. The maximum is 100 points. If the total score is substantially less than 100, that may indicate that important issues are missing - the individual step score will indicate where additional action may be required.

At some point in time I will try to improve the rating system. This would mainly include relations between the various steps and will downgrade the score for certain steps or for the total if certain other steps are not properly done.

THE principle of MANAGEMENT RESULTS

"A manager tends to secure most effective results - through and with others - by performing the management work of planning, organizing, leading and controlling."
